Michael Donaldson Presents on Legal Issues with Remixes and Mash-Ups at SXSW

At the 2017 South by Southwest (SXSW) film, music and technology festival, Partner Michael Donaldson presented the session “Learn Your Rights: Using Mash-Ups and Remixes.” Michael’s presentation covered the latest news on how courts have endorsed the flood of new films being commercially released. Though big studios go along with the courts’ logic when it suits their promotional purposes, they may face a far different reality when a case is actually taken to court.

Dubbed “the Obi-Wan Kenobi of fair use” by the American Bar Association, Michael’s highly interactive workshops have helped thousands of filmmakers understand their rights. He has spoken at SXSW for many years on a wide variety of topics, from the risks associated with controversial documentaries to fair use in feature films.

SXSW is an annual set of film, interactive media, and music festivals and conferences that take place in mid-March in Austin, Texas. It was founded in 1987, and has grown in both size and scope since then. Michael’s presentation was held on March 13.
